19-45 mm. Southern palaearctic species. In Hungary found mainly in forests on mountains and hills. Foodplants include a range of broad-leaved and coniferous trees, particularly oak (Quercus) and hornbeam (Carpinus). Larvae develop in standing dead trees and stumps, both above and below ground. After three years the larvae pupate inside a chamber made from wood fragments and their own frass. The adults fly around sunset at forest margins and clearings from early August until mid-September. The adults are commonly found as remnants in the droppings or pellets of predators, such as foxes, badgers and owls.
